Famous Toronto Squares

Summers in Toronto are filled with special events, festivals and happenings of all sorts. There are plenty of venues, both indoor and outdoor, that are host to a multitude of events year-round.

Nathan Phillips Square

Every year, 1.5 million visitors attend various events at the vast square that surrounds Toronto’s City Hall. While the summertime sees a multitude of events occur here, the square gets plenty of attendees in the winter. Namely, New Years Eve celebrations take place at the square, and a huge skating rink draws kids and adults alike.

Recently, the countdown for the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games was kicked off at Nathan Phillips Square. Revellers attended to celebrate and enjoy live musical and dance performances. The square has also won a slew of awards in recognition for its architecture and revitalization of the area. 

Yonge-Dundas Square

At the epicentre of the city, Yonge-Dundas Square is the optimal location for both locals and tourists. The popular spot is sometimes referred to as the Times Square of Toronto. The square sees live entertainers stage impromptu performances and also hosts a variety of free events.

In particular, there are movie screenings throughout the summer that draw people of all ages. Yonge-Dundas Square is surrounded by some of Toronto’s top attractions, including the Toronto Eaton Centre and the Hard Rock Cafe. 

 Maple Leaf Square

Maple Leaf Square is also a central downtown attraction closeby Toronto’s most desirable spots. The area is flanked by the Air Canada Centre and a modern building complex that houses Maple Leaf Condo towers, retailers and the eateries e11even and Real Sports Bar.

The square is inundated with concert goers or sports fans before and after musical performances and games throughout the year. During the 2014 NBA playoffs, games were screened to thousands of Toronto Raptors fans and Maple Leaf Square was dubbed ‘Jurassic Park.’ 

 Mel Lastman Square

Mel Lastman Square is located just north of Toronto’s downtown in North York. Though less hectic than the city’s downtown squares, the area still hosts a myriad of events year-round, including Canada Day celebrations and Sunday Serenades during the summer months.

The square is surrounded by corporate offices, government buildings and a variety of restaurants boasting diverse cuisines. Mel Lastman Square is the perfect place to stroll through while visiting the North York community.
