The Dos and Don’ts of Packing Toiletries

May 28, 2014 — 2 minute read

For travelers who prefer to use their own products instead of those provided by the hotel, it’s a must to pack toiletries along with clothes, shoes and accessories. But there is one major problem: how do you store them in your bag and not worry about the them opening or getting damaged while your suitcase is loaded onto the plane?

We’ve got a few dos and don’ts to help your items arrive to your destination intact.

Packing Toiletries

DO check what the acceptable size for liquid items is for carry-ons beforehand. The size limit designated by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration is 3.4
ounces. Any items over this limit must go in your checked suitcase. This is especially important to remember as any products over the size limitation will be thrown out by airport personnel.

DO put shampoos, conditioners, lotions and toothpaste in a large reusable zipper bag in your suitcase. This will prevent any spilled liquids from seeping out and getting onto clothes or other items.

DO transfer liquid products to small containers, or stock up on the travel-sizes of your favourite products. If you don’t use the entire product on your trip you can always make use of it afterwards.

DO pack perfume and cologne bottles in bubble wrap, or cushion it between your clothes to avoid chances of breakage. To be extra safe, buy a rollerball version of your favourite perfume to take on the trip- you can always stash it in your purse after your vacation.

DON’T wait until the last minute to pack your suitcase; this will not give you enough time to prepare your toiletries and other delicate items for packing.

DON’T skimp out on your luggage set; a padded and well-constructed suitcase can provide extra protection for your items and its durability will ensure you got more mileage out of it.

DON’T pack jewelry in your suitcase, instead, store it carefully in your carry-on.

DON’T forget the weight limitations enforced by airlines; weigh your luggage before heading to the airport to make sure it’s an acceptable weight.

Once you arrive at your hotel, unpack all of your toiletries and place them as you would in your own bathroom – this will make yourstay more comfortable and enjoyable. One final tip: DON’T forget to pack up your toiletries at the end of your hotel stay!
